||
DIVE INFO: | This is an off shore oil platform rig that sunk about 16years ago 10 nautical miles off Lancelin while being towed down the WA coast to be refitted. It is lying upside down in 42 Meters of water with the highest point at 26 Meters. It can be penetrated and is full of crays, however at 42 meters there isn't a lot of time to do that if you are on air. Some big Snapper, WA Dhufish and Skippy. etc... can be seen here. Nothing was salvaged from the rig when it went down due to the depth, so there is heaps to see. The rig is a shaped like a Pyramid the flat bottom facing the surface with a north to south slope. The living quarters and all the machinery lie under the wreck. The legs, which broke off during the sinking lie to the side in a twisted mess. Have a look under the leg support on the top of the wreck, crays occupy every inch of space. |

On seaward side of the main reef there are several large caves, most being swim through, (take your torch). On a good day there are Dolphins, Seals, Crays, Rays etc with visibility of 4 - 15 mts. This is a great spot for the beginner to the more advanced diver or snorkler. Caution- When there is a swell of over 1.5mts there can be quite a surge in the caves. |

DIVE INFO: | Dive instructors commonly use this site as a safe, interesting place to take their students, during a southwesterly it is very protected. The bottom composition is Silt so it gets extremely murky, this is made even worse when students are around, but it's full of life and an easy pleasant dive. Ropes join the wrecks and the novice can enjoy the wreck trail with the knowledge that staying with the rope trail in sight will keep you from loosing your way. Average visibility is about 3mtrs, although on a still day it can get as good as 10 meters. |

You'll find a variety of fish feeding and sheltering amongst the invertebrates. Old Wives, damselfish, Leatherjackets, Blennies, Yellowtails and Boxfish are all found in large numbers. I've also seen some Octopuses at times if you look real hard. Just a word of caution on the large number of fishing lines and hooks that lay on the bottom |

||
DIVE INFO: | The site is an awesome dive. The HMAS SWAN shipwreck was sunk purposely in 1997 for divers, the wreck lies upright in 31 meters of water, over 113 meters long and over 20 meters wide. One dive is certainly not enough to fully explore the wreck. The average visibility in this area is 18-25 meters, although it was only about 7-8 meters when we went. In the short time the SWAN has been down, she has already become home to 80 different species of fish. This is a dive not to be missed while you are visiting Western Australia. The wreck is fairly safe for penetration as holes have been cut in the hull to the point that at almost no time are you not within light entering the wreck, this does NOT mean that you can take it less seriously as within the wreck it can be easy to forget your no deco time and you can still get disorientated too, so as with all penetrations treat it seriously. |

DIVE INFO: | This is the second longest wooden jetty in the southern hemisphere. Best area to dive is about the last 300mtrs of the jetty, you can dive it using the tourist train that takes you almost all the way out, but check on running times first. You can also hire a trolley from Naturaliste Dive (you pass it on the way to the jetty) but 2kms is a hell of a walk (don't even think about carrying your gear!!!!) Simplest method is a boat, you don't need anything huge as it's very protected here and the ramp is right next to the jetty. If you get a bit cool during your dive, the bakery next to the dive shop make THE most awesome pastries (pies, sausage rolls etc etc) I pig out after nearly every dive... Stuff the waistline!!! ;-) Oh Yeah! this is the BEST night dive too. |

DIVE INFO: | Situated on the south east side of the Island this 'hidden' dive site is spectacular. Being a site that is not listed on any of the maps and charts it is a site that is relatively 'un-dived'. Positioned approximately 850m South west of Dyer Island, 'Crystals' has a depth range of 8-18m.Entering the water, which is generally quite calm due to the position of the site, the first thing you will notice is the sheer amount of caves and swim throughs that you can see just from the surface. Looking down you will know straight away that 1 tank is not going to be enough! As you descend into this array of caves you will see many fish of all species scarper into different directions to make way for you. This is the site where you are most likely to see just about every species of fish you are likely to encounter around Rottnest in the 1 dive! From the colourful Harlequin fish to the breathtaking big Blue Gropers, that can push you backwards just from the power of a tail kick in the opposite direction. Stay there a while though because he is sure to return curiously to see his new 'Scuba friend'. Once you have had a good look around over the top of the reef, begin to explore the subterranean caves for more exciting encounters! On this dive expect to see large Samson fish, the occasional Dhufish, Western Blue Devils, Buffalo Bream, Morwongs, Box fish, Leatherjackets and of course Crayfish! The topography of Crystal Palace is just brilliant with constant caves, holes and swim throughs; this is a dive that you will not get bored with. The site covers around 6-800m of awesome reef, which will excite even the most experienced diver. |

DIVE INFO: | This is better as an early morning dive before our famous howling sea breeze makes it's usual definite summer's day appearance. The drop-off itself is pretty cool, like flying out over a cliff the top of which sits at about 4-5mtrs then plummets down to about a 10 mtr or so drop. For those that have never done a "bottomless" Wall dive in the tropics, this is the next best thing, especially if the vis is good. Follow the drop-off with your echo sounder and anchor at the eastern end (about the GPS points given), jump in and go straight down the face and swim west, you will pass a few great overhangs that can be looked at on your way back to the boat as they are about midway up the wall. Where the cliff top starts to slope deeper go a little further on and you can find some nice finger sponges then turn around and head slowly up the face and back to your boat. |

DIVE INFO: | It is a ridge that rises to around 15mtrs from the sandy bottom at 26mtrs. Best time of year for this site seems to be around January - April, outside of this, apart from the winter swells that come in May (or June if lucky), it seems to be an area that gets a dirty swirling current through it, making vis less than great. Even in mid summer you can find extremely cold currents and thermoclines wafting accross the reef, you can see them before you hit them. |

The reef is virtually formed like a crater with a hollow in the center and many swimthroughs accessable from the inside, especially the northwest and southeast sections of the reef. The most awesome swimthrough is accessable only from the outside and is again on the northwest side, with a huge cavernous opening at seabed level. |

The wreck is located on the south side of Rottnest at Porpoise Bay, be wary of reefs when entering the area. Located NW of Dyer Island the site tends to be a very calm as the outer reefs protect it from all but the bigger swells. DIVE INFO: | The Orizaba is arguably the biggest and most spectacular wreck off our coast, well she would be if the ocean swells hadn't done their work. She is a great dive though and it is hard to imagine such a large ship could collapse down to so little. Her history is amazing, the coast hidden by a haze of bush fires, her skipper actually thought he was entering in towards Fremantle, she crossed the shallow Five Fathom Bank, then when he realised his mistake he turned around to head back out to deeper water and THEN got stuck on the reef... talk about a sad tale! She was a 3325 ton Orient Liner and was visible off the coast for many years until salvage and erosion finally took her below the water line. Beware if you are doing this wreck in seas above 1mtr swell, as this is the shallowest rise this side of Africa, the smallest swell causes tremendous surge and if you go sticking your head in a hole, you may just get sucked in or hurt badly. We prefer this site around March/April on a day when the swell has been less than 1mtr for about a week. |

||
DIVE INFO: | The actual name of this wreck is not certain and although probably wrong, it is generally referred to as the Gareenup. It is half a barge that was relocated to this site when the Rous Head extensions would have meant that it would have been covered up under rock. Gets all sorts of life and the growth, like all wrecks is pretty good despite the hammering it gets from constant diving. Watch out for the rock fishermen as you go in and come out, they have this weird idea that divers scare away fish (no matter how many times they get told the opposite is actually the case). We have been bombarded with hooks and sinkers on a few occasions. It is broken up but still in good condition for a wreck dive. It is best dived before the sea breaze with a swell of less than 2 mts. Hazards: beware of fishing line, broken glass and rusting steel |

Occasionally one may even decide to mouth a knee or a head when you are swimming with them. Dark Cave is like many of the "lumps around Carnac on the West side of the island, many caves can be found. |

DIVE INFO: | For it's age (101 years in 1999) this wreck is very intact compared to others off our coast, the reason? being inside 5 fathom bank and not right at a breaking reef, it is reasonably protected from swell and storms. Vis? well it can be sad here, expect 5mtrs with 10-15mtrs on a good day, can be a bit surgy too. DIRECTIONS: | The site is just out from the concrete jetty (on west coast highway about halfway between Castle and Malcom Streets). Best way to do this site is to have two cars, park one in the bottom carpark, north of the Marine Research Laboratory and the second at your start point, the carpark at the top of the hill overlooking the jetty. This way not only will you cover a lot more ground, but you won't have to walk back up the steep hill you walked down just to get to the water. Enter the water straight out from the stairs and head out about 100mtrs then turn right and head north, after about 100mtrs north start angling your heading back towards shore (the north carpark). This is a good place to get the hang of compass navigation and my directions are rudimentry, so check your bearings before starting the dive. | ||
DIVE INFO: | Best dived during an Easterly Wind, especially if the swell has been down for a week or so and the vis has had time to clear. This is actually a great little shore dive, but is a bit of hard work just to get into the water. This is only a shallow dive but the country has many gullies to look into. THIS IS A MARINE PARK, NO SPEARING OR TAKING OF ANYTHING!!!! The fishlife is not bad here because it IS a marine park. |

DIVE INFO: | This wreck was recently (1998) discovered by a group of divers who just "happened" upon it whilst looking for a crayfish site. The actual identity of the wreck is still to be proven. She sits upright on the sand and in such a deep flat site with no real breakers happening that she is in fairly good condition for a wreck off our coast. Don't expect to swim through the Titanic, its mainly just a skeleton with a couple of openings, but growth is amazing, corals, sponges, it all seems to grow more healthy on a wreck than it does on reef, please if you do visit this site, watch your fins, the growth IS delicate and too many clumsy divers will ruin it in no time! A very pretty dive on a calm day with good visibility. |

DIVE INFO: | On the east and central portions of the reef are some great caves, with DENSE fish life. This is a great dive site if you have a small boat and can't take the West Coast battering of strong winds. You can launch within Cockburn sound, where it's more protected, and just duck out to the site when the winds (on or offshore) are at their mildest. It is also a great dive for beginners, not to deep, hard to get lost (cus you can just circle around the reef - that would however take up most of a tank, so keep that in mind) and it IS very interesting. Have heard of some divers that had a huge school near here, so dense they couldn't see through it, till they parted and a shark rushed in, looked at them and swam off, not sure what it was but it was around 2-3mtrs long. |

Eagle bay is on the north side of the Island and is easily accessible by boat or a 5-minute swim from the shore. The bay itself, beautiful with crystal clear water and almost white sand, makes it a haven for snorkelling and sunbathing. Being protected from all of the elements, this is truly the perfect beach! The diving here is quite spectacular. Looking from the surface, there doesn't appear to be much under the water, but don't let that fool you. Hop into the water just in front of (the Ocean side) the reef, which protrudes up from the surface and is easily visible from the beach. Descend here. Once you hit the bottom you have 2 options, you can head to the right, which is a reef wall that runs down to the sand and goes around to form a large arc. The other option is to swim directly toward the reef, which has a small cave in it. Enter the cave and follow through to the end. This ends up being a tunnel full of fish and other marine creatures and goes for about 15 metres and turns around an 'L' shape. When you come out of this cave you will find yourself at the same point as option 1. Upon your exit, you will find yourself in a huge underwater bay. The sedimentary reef here looks like a row of toppled dominoes with all types of marine life in between the layers. Here you can expect to find the iridescent Blue Devils, Crayfish (many females) and Red Banded Wrasse. As you follow this bay around you will come across a cave, which has an entry hole at sand level with about 1 metre of ground clearance for you to swim through. This is where the bay turns into something quite spectacular! Swim under this roof and into the adjoining cave. Once inside the cave swim to the middle and lay back and watch the show! Describing this cave is never going to do it justice, diving it is the only way! But I will give it a try. The cave is circular and opens up to be around 15 metres in diameter and has a roof about 4 metres high. With the exception of another hole at the other side of the cave, it is totally enclosed. With visibility at 100% clear and no silt, there is a feeling of being in open air. The roof is scattered with holes no bigger than a hubcap (these look like dark patches of weed from the surface). These holes let in sunlight, which forms a beam of light from the roof to the floor. Because of the water refracting on the surface and top of the reef, the light moves around in circles making the beams of light move backwards and forwards like a spotlight. Add another 20 or so of these 'spotlights' and you feel as though you are in a night club. The lights dart around the cave occasionally picking up a fish or school of fish in the ray. This is one of the most stunning features of diving in caves and is sure to make you want to sit for a while you take it all in. Once you have had enough of that (which for me took a while), head out to the hole at the other side of the cave and back out into the bay. From here, take time to explore the walls and slats of reef that protrude overhead. Here you will find more Crayfish and a fairly big 'resident' Wobbegong shark sleeping or watching a batch of Crayfish. Give him a wide berth and continue along the wall until it comes back around to where you started your dive. The difficulty rating for this dive is beginner and above. I do recommend that new divers avoid the tunnel part of this dive, as it can feel a little claustrophobic at times. The water here is calm, clear and warm and with a maximum of 4.5 metres it is a relaxing dive for one of those days where nothing else is diveable. |

DIVE INFO: |
This is a flat topped limestone reef that projects out about 500m in to the waters of the bay. The sides range from 1 metre high to 3 metres further out. A wide range of life lives along the walls and in the many nooks and crannies with in the limestone itself. The base of the ledges grade into rubble and then into the fine white sand which makes up the beach. As it is close to shore a surge develops towards low tide that can make the closer in section unpleasent. Along these walls there is a number species of hard and soft corals offering some great photo opportunities. A wide range of fish are also seen. A survey done in south passage at the southern end of the island reported 323 species of fish. This end does not appear to be much less. The beach is a mesting beach for loggerhead turtles and they are often seen in the waters of the bay. Dolphins, sharks, whales, manta rays and whale sharks are also seen in this area. The large fish feeding event in early 2001 which featured hundreds of sharks, Brydes and humpback whales and leage pelagic fish was between this reef and cape Inscription. |
