Purpose
The TDI Intro to Tech course introduces students to the world of technical diving. The course will familiarise students with technical dive equipment and its appropriate configuration, the mindset and planning required for technical diving and has a focus on foundational dive skills, with particular emphasis on advanced buoyancy, trim and finning techniques.

The course is ideal for someone who is interested in increasing their dive skills but not sure whether they want to get into technical diving or for laying the foundation skills for future technical courses including the use of twin tanks thereby allowing the students to practice and refine those skills so that they can focus on the specific technical specialty latter.

Prerequisites
1.     Minimum age of 18 or 15 with parental consent
2.     Must have a minimum certification of Open Water Scuba diver.
3.     Must provide proof of 25 logged open water dives

Course Content
The course involves both theory and practical sessions.

Theory covers:

Basic physics and physiology of diving leading to an introduction to Nitrox and Trimix theory. Note that this is an introduction only and doesn’t qualify students to dive with either Nitrox or Trimix.

Technical dive equipment and its configuration and management (In particular twin tanks)

Dive planning with particular emphasis on preparation and contingencies.

Practical sessions:

3 dives are required in which continual refinement of buoyancy, trim and finning technique will occur.

Appropriate use of twin tanks, including manifold drills and emergency procedures.

Divers will be expected to perform a number of dive drills while maintaining buoyancy and trim including the deployment of an SMB at depth.

Equipment Requirements
Each student should have either conventional open water dive equipment or a twin tank dive system.

An SMB with at least 11kg of lift and an appropriate reel or spool.

Advice on gear alternatives will be provided during the course and divers wishing to purchase gear may wish to delay their purchases so that they can make informed purchases. It should be noted that divers may get more out of the course if they are diving with twin tanks and the course provides a perfect opportunity for divers to make their first twin tank dives.

Course Structure

Theory sessions can be split over 2 evenings or can be conducted over a full day. 3 dives are required and can occur on the same day. These dives are focussed on technique and are most likely local shore dives.

Numbers of Students

The maximum number of students per course is 6 with a minimum of 4 required to make the course viable and keep costs down. If you are interested in a course and there is nothing scheduled get together with a few buddies and a course can be organised around your preferred dates.

Course Combinations

This course can be usefully combined with either a TDI Nitrox or TDI Advanced Nitrox course and although theory and practical sessions will increase in number there are less than if the two courses are run separately and hence course costs are also lower.
